Santa Barbara's beaches and backyard pools or the swimming holes in the county's

Mikaela, was wearing a life vest before the 3-year-old went into the pool.
She joined the youngster as she paddled around. And when Mikaela got cold,
she helped her out of the water. But something still went horribly wrong.

Barbara has one special resource impossible to miss: Water. Ever present
in pools, the ocean and creeks, the stuff practically surrounds the
community. That is why many local parents for years have enrolled their children
in infant and toddler swim classes, the hope being that early exposure to
a pool might not necessarily save a life, but at least keep tots from drowning.
